In many parts of the world, the new year is marked and celebrated on the 1st January. But what does a ‘new year’ really mean?
The 1st January is when the calendar starts again, it is a new calendar year. Another birthday, another Christmas, another Easter…
But…
There is a different new year. A time that indicates true renewal, a season that supports you to begin again, to reset, renew and rebalance your life. For those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere, in places like the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, that season is Spring, marked by the Spring Equinox in March.
Unfortunately, the 1st January date has become a signal to start over, to set goals, build new habits, and redefine who we are. And while there is never a wrong time to begin again, (indeed every new day we wake up is an opportunity to reset, try again and choose differently) the 1st January is not a season that is naturally designed for our growth.
January might mark a new calendar year, but it does not always offer the right conditions for deep renewal.
Spring does…

Spring supports our renewal more powerfully, it aligns us with a deeper, natural, rhythm- one that reminds us that growth doesn’t always come from pressure, but from timing, environment and readiness.
Spring is Nature’s New Year.
As the scripture Ecclesiates 3 reminds us: ‘To everything there is a season’
Lets go deeper…
The Spring Equinox:
The Spring Equinox is a day in March, typically March 20th or the 21st. It is a moment of near perfect balance, when the sun crosses earth’s equator causing day and night to become equal lengths.
It marks the beginning of spring, a point that I now consider to be the true New Year, when the days grow longer, the nights shorter and the air becomes warmer.
But beyond this physical shift, the Spring Equinox carries a deeper message.
It is a reminder that life is always moving in cycles:
- Light and dark
- Rest and growth
- Release and renewal
Nothing stays the same forever.
And neither are we meant to.
“This is your season to step out of hibernation; to grow, to bloom and to begin again.”
The balance of day and night symbolise it is time to rebalance your life. To bring your thoughts, your energy and your actions back into alignment with what truly matters to you.
It is a reminder that our season of hibernation is ending.
This is the time to balance your inner world with the activity of the outer world, with spring.
To show up again, to grow, to bloom- just like the other things in nature- the animals, the flowers and the plants.
During Spring the longer days and shorter nights are indicative of light overcoming darkness. We can step forward into that light, and spread our own light into the world.
The Spring Equinox marks the beginning of renewal.
Just like the earth, you are supported to begin again.
Rethinking January, is it really a time to begin again?
January arrives in the heart of winter.
The days are still short.
The air is still cold.
Energy feels low, and for many of us our minds and bodies are still in a place of rest, recovery or even survival.
January is not the most natural or supportive time for new beginnings, goal setting and resolutions.
But yet..
When the clock strikes midnight we set ourselves big goals, attempt to build new habits and plan to becoming newer, better versions of ourselves…errrm really!

Don’t feel bad or knock yourself down when you fail to complete those resolutions, many of us do.
Because winter is not a season to begin it is a season of being.
A season of being with ourselves so we can notice:
- What feels out of alignment
- What we are ready to release
- What we truly want
We need to rethink January and winter, as a season of being, of recovering and of preparing. You can then step into Spring, Nature’s New Year, feeling energised, knowing where and how you plan to rebalance your life and shine your light.
Using Spring to Reset, Renew and Rebalance Your Life:
Resetting: Is not about starting from zero, its about being aware of the parts and elements of your life that need to change or grow, and then moving into that space.
Resetting might look like:
- Letting go of the pressure to have everything figured out.
- Interrupting negative thought patterns, like ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I’ll never be able to do that’.
- Creating space in your schedule, just for you.
- Choosing to respond differently, even if it feels unfamiliar, for your greater good.
- Stepping away from friendships and relationships that drain and damage you.
- Aligning yourself with people and experiences that support your growth.
Sometimes, the most powerful reset isn’t external, its internal. Like becoming more aware of yourself and thinking differently.
Renewing: Spring is the season for renewal and growth.
But growth doesn’t start with flowers. It starts with planting seeds.
For us, these ‘seeds’ are small, intentional actions that may not look like much at first, but when nurtured consistently, they begin to take root and grow.

Your seeds of renewal might be:
- A new mindset.
- A boundary you’re finally honouring.
- A dream you’re allowing yourself to consider again.
- A commitment to your emotional wellbeing.
Seeds don’t rush, so keep tending to them, keep showing up, so they start to flower and bloom.
Remember, Spring is on your side- it is the right condition for your seeds to grow.
Rebalancing: Balance isn’t something you find once and keep forever.
It’s something you continuously come back to, maybe every season or multiple times throughout the season.
You are the Chief Executive of your life, so if you feel the need to keep adjusting or realigning to rebalance your life, that is totally OK.
Rebalancing might look like:
- Saying no without guilt.
- Resting without needing to earn it.
- Speaking to yourself with more compassion.
- Choosing peace over proving a point.
Rebalancing is the gentle practice of returning to yourself, again and again. Its about being aware of when you are off-centre and being intentional about coming back into alignment.

Final Word:
The Spring Equinox doesn’t demand transformation.
It offers opportunity.
Opportunity to reset.
Opportunity to renew.
Opportunity to rebalance.
So as the light returns, gently ask yourself: “What kind of life am I ready to grow into?”
And then take one small, intentional step in that direction.
What are you releasing this season? And what are you making space for?
You don’t have to have all the answers, just the willingness to start.
